question about sidekick II pre-paid

my brother gave me his sidekick II and i would like to use it for just the internet/aim (data plan). Now, can i just use a sim card from ebay? if so, what steps do i need to do to activate pre-paid service? because i tried just putting the sim card into my sidekick, but it doesnt work.

anyways. I asked in the hiptop froums, and they said i can call up customer service and tell them i want to change my prepaid sim over to a prepaid account.
