From what I understand, there are many mistakes that can be made when shipping to Canada. I don't want to pay too much in shipping or make the recipient pay some fee to receive the item.

What's the best way to do that?

The scenario:

I recently shipped something to Canada through the eBay global shipping program (I just ship it to a domestic eBay facility, then eBay sends it on to Canada). The buyer asked if I'd swap the power LED for a blue one. I said there'd be no charge for that, but shipment would be delayed until I received an order of various color LEDs. He decided to stick with the standard red LED so he would receive it more quickly.

Just before I shipped, I added a socket so he can easily swap the LED. I also included a special gamebit screwdriver with the item and told him I'd send an envelope very soon with a blue LED with some rubber feet.

Well the buyer will have to pay for duty. Ship through USPS is probably the cheapest option, avoid UPS like a plague since they charge outrageous brokerage fee. But I am not familiar with the ebay shipping thing so you need to talk to ebay about that.

But you are going to have to eat the second shipping.

Yes the items that increase costs are the customs duties, if any, since NAFTA allows US/Mexico made imports duty free. The other item is any brokerage fee for the paperwork.
