I am new to the world of scsi and was just wondering that if I purchased a seagate cheetah (4th generation, 18xl) could I use it on an adaptec 2940uw controller. And if so, would it degrade performance??? I know that the 4th gen cheetah's are ultra scsi(i guess which means they can transfer 160mb/sec??). I guess what i am trying to say is would it be advisable to put the hd on a 2940 or go out and buy the 19160.

It would probably degarde performance alot, as that drive is Ultra160 and the card is UltraWide, two generations old.

I would recommend 29160 or 29160N over 19160 if you EVER plan to run anything besides Microsoft Windows. ie, linux

It would barely degrade perforance at all. The 18XL is only capable of about 35MB/s, while the real world limit of SCSI UW is around 33MB/s. No need to go waste money on another controller.
