Question about routers

Hey guys, I got a simple question about routers. I currently have a modem/router 2-1 pacakge through Verizon DSL, but the router is starting to become terrible - low to no signal, frequent cut-offs, etc and the modem/router is no longer than 15 feet away... So the question I have is, is it possible to buy a new router and use it together with the current modem/router I have right now? Would I have to disable the router part of my modem/router? Is that even possible? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Add: And also, if anyone could suggest a solid router to get. Thanks.

Ha, I actually never tried that. If it starts bugging out, I just usually turn it on and off right away, but I'll try that out. Thanks!
