Question about root canal

I was done a root canal but almost in the end of it, a piece of file broke inside the canal. The doctor who did it gave me couple of options, i can either proceed with crown & cap with that piece still inside & in future if that gets infected or gives me pain then i can go for a implant or a clean up from an endodontic.

2nd option being i go see an endodontic right away, which i did. Endodontic suggested that the way the piece is lodged in, it is almost impossible to take that piece out but he can try. If he is not able to take that piece out then he suggests a teeth implant. He also did not answer my question directly about leaving the piece in there for now.

I read about this online, & its all mixed opinion. Currently i have a 24 month waiting period on my insurance otherwise i would've gone for a implant.

So my question to you all is, has this happened to any of you before (file being lodged inside the teeth)? and have you left it (file piece) inside your teeth & covered it with a crown and cap. If so did you have any problems arise due to that in future?

thanks

No, I take care of my teeth. Floss and use Sonicare toothbrush and rinse w/ ACT Anticavity Fluoride Mouthwash.

First, ask the Endodontist to give you an answer. If it were his tooth would he leave it as is and go ahead with having it capped? If docs/dentists don't answer your questions then question them again until they do. That's part of what you are paying them for.

I say leave it there and have the root canal finished and cap(crown) put on. I have seen broken files in teeth and patients who have no problems with them.

In the future if you have probs with it THEN go for having it pulled and having an implant (which isn't a tooth implant but a titanium screw they put into your jaw bone and a crown is attached to that) done.

Endodontist said he will go in there & try to take that piece out, but the way it looks, the chances of getting it out is very low as in 5-10%.

Even i am planning to leave it there & go with the implant if i start getting pain in that teeth again. Its been 2 weeks now & i dont have any pain as such now, so i am planning to cap it sometime next week.

With the opiates/pain meds you get, I say the swelling is more annoying.

He gave me nothing after the procedure was done, no prescription pain killer! I just bought advil and took it for two days!

Because after a root canal there shouldn't be pain. The nerve is gone.
