Question about RMA'ing a 75GXP IBM harddrive

I've got a 30gig 75gxp harddisk that is making some FUNKY scratching noises but it keeps passing the drive fitness test. The noises seem to be getting louder and more frequent and I'm am growing hesitant to put anything of importance on it. Is there a way to RMA a drive without it actually failing????

I have read that FAQ but can't find anything that speaks to this question, "Is there a way to RMA a drive without it actually failing????". I'm going to call IBM in a bit and talk with them, but I was hoping to find out if anyone has had success swapping the drive out on just the sounds it was making.

Drop it on a hard floor from a height of like 5 feet. That should break it, but cause to physical damage and then you can RMA it

I've actually RMA'd a drive to IBM that I dropped on accident. They sent me a replacement, no questions asked.

Ok, I felt a little guilty about the above post. You can try running the IBM Drive Fitness Test. It will tell you if something is wrong with your HD without it actually being broken. You can then use the error code to RMA your drive. Here is a link to the test:

i've rma'd 4 ibm drives without any of them failing. just tell them the symptoms and they'll replace it.
