I ordered 2 printheads from a person on ebay. Received the items, and put them into 2 separate printers of the same model. The model that the printhead was supposed to support according to the documentation they provided as well as reported by many pages on google.

The printheads never printed...anything. The old printheads printed lightly, and sporadically. So I knew the machine actually worked soundly, to an extent.

For two weeks I tried to get them to work, and spent some time on the phone and by email trying to resolve the issue. No dice. So they asked that I send them back to test, in the off chance that maybe they were in fact bad. Unlikely, but hey they werent doing me any good.

Today I receive and email stating that I was refunded my money, which I didn't ask for at that point, minus my 15% restocking fee.

Which kind of chaps my ass. Since #1, I didn't ask for a refund. And #2, the damn things never worked. Now if it had been 1 printhead in 1 printer, I could understand it. But 2 separate printers of the same type, unlikely. And no, I didn't install them wrong. I work with these printers all the time. I bought these printheads because the original ones are about $400-500. These are about $200 a piece.

I realize that most of you will just tell me to take it in the bum and call it a day. Can they legally charge me that restocking fee without me asking for a refund? If they can, whats to stop someone from sending broken goods to buyers, then charging them a percentage when they send it back and don't ask for a refund?

Have you tried asking them why they did that? Maybe they'll fix the issue...

Normally a restocking fee should only be charged when the items are not defective. I would certainly be pissed in your case.

Agreed. But if they got the product back and it worked, then they assume it was the buyer's fault.

update: Talked to the salesperson that I was speaking to the entire time trying to work out why the units were not working. She said the returns department were the ones who issued the refund. So I am getting the remainder of it back.

As to the product coming back and working, I don't know if they attempted to use the model of printer that I had, as the printhead was specified to work in a variety of printers.

Its not the standard printhead. I don't know if it was the ribbon, or label that may not work with that printhead. The problem was that we hit a roadblock without any direction to take it to diagnose why they didn't work in the model that I had.

I'm happy with the outcome, but I just really wish they would have worked. Now I have to find something else to solve this issue without spending 2x as much.
