if you're called into duty, can a graduate school kick you out? or do they have to allow you to take a leave of absence?

I would think so, because if they booted you because uncle sam tells you to grab a rifle and stand a post it wouldnt be fair just to boot you on the basis of absence, since you have a legitimate reason.

They cannot kick you out. Most of them will refund you all of your tuition, you may be able to get full refunds on all your books and you'll just be out of school for that time. They can't really "penalize" you for serving your country. Check out the link below for a lot of the details. If you have any problems, have your unit administrator or a recruiter contact the school and set 'em straight.

USERRA Act

I've been mobilized since 28SEP01 and most employers and schools have been more than accomodating with a few exceptions for some of our people. Also remember, that "Patriotic High" that everyone was on is fading fast, so some of these places may start trying to screw you over. The law is on your side. If you need any more assistance, PM me and I'll help you out.

oh no problems at all, i was just looking into air force reserves... but i would really like to go to graduate school at MIT as well (yes i know it's hard to get in :p).

i dunno though, if i was going to do this, i think i'd want to go with rotc (so i can be an officer), but then it would be kind of disjointed because i'd be going from doing 4+ years of research into 4 years of active service. guess that won't work out... poo.

anyhow, thanks for the info :)

hmm maybe some military people can answer my question...

are research positions in the military generally civilian? or can you be a commissioned officer and do research....
