Question about replacement lamp for RPTV

The lamp in my HP md5880n went out last week so I purchased a new one from the "Bay."

It came relatively quickly and was well packed but compared to the old lamp it completely lacks a front glass plate as seen in this image:

I installed the lamp and it powers up fine but if I run this thing long term without the glass will it cause damage to the TV?
What is the purpose of the glass? Is it to block heat, prevent wandering fingers from touching the element, or just fluff?

I've sent a the same questions to the seller and I'm waiting to hear back but I thought I'd ask here too.

Good question. From the many lamps I replaced, a lot of dust does collect on the glass. If that dust instead collects on the lamp burner I suppose it could overheat much more and reduce it's life. I wouldn't fret though. If that bulb burns out after 1-2 years, it maybe time for a new TV. They are FAR cheaper to a point where a new TV could be a better purchase than another $100 bulb.

That glass could also provide structural support. Those lamps can get hot enough to cook steak and maybe even bake so it can warp itself.
