I am going to be renting a room out from a guy who owns a townhouse and he asked me to give him a copy of my ID, social security card and bank statement.
I have never rented from a private residence before and wasn't sure if this type of request usual. I have personally met the guy and he seems normal enough and has told me he will be giving me receipts for everything. I was thinking of blacking out some of the numbers, especially on the bank statement, but not sure about the SS card. Anyone have any experience with renting and such? Am I setting myself up for identity theft ?

scan a color copy and change the number around and print it :)

I definitely won't give up my account number..

the one thing you can do is setup a new bank account, transfer everything out and close the old one.. thats what i did when I got a mortgage..

he probably won't rent to you if you don't provide what he asks, so if you are that paranoid, find another place to live
