Question about renting a car

Can you rent a car even if you don't know when you will be returning it? I'm flying somewhere and I need a car, but I don't know how long I will be staying.

no. you would have to rent it for a given period and then extend it or return it early (which can incur penalties)

I don't think returning early usually incurs penalties, unless the post above meant that if you failed to notify them of either case (extending or returning early) could cause penalties.

I used to fly for work fairly often. i would fly into a city on Monday and the car would ne rented until Friday. However, more often than not, i returned the car on Wed evening or sometime Thursday--I never got charged any additional penalties for not keeping it until Friday.

it is not usually enforced, but it IS discussed in your rental contract. Part of the info you intial usually lists early and later return charges as well as mileage or fuel charges.
