Might as well roll it all into one.

1) Does renters insurance cover items (like an engagement ring) if they are lost or damaged outside of the house? If not, what insurance do I need to add?

2) Is $686 a year good for coverage on two vehicles, 1990, 1991, 22 Male, 23 female, married? Everything is maxed, underinsured, uninsured, medical, 100/300 damage, bodily harm, etc. Just no collision coverage (Ie if we are at fault I think) since they are older cars.

3) I'm paying $58 a month for cable now, it was 22 for the first 4 months but then it jumped way up since I dont have cable through them. If I call them up and tell them that I could get DSL through SBC for 30 a month, and its comparable speeds so Im considering it for saving 28/month, would they drop my price at all per month? (I really dont want to go back to SBC though ;)

THanks

1) You'd have to talk to an agent about that. I thought it typically covered theft, vandalism and acts of nature or fire

2) $686/YEAR for two cars with only liability? That's not too bad. I'm paying $900/6 mos. for full coverage for ONE car. Will be changing in a month...oof

3) SERIOUSLY doubt it.

3) I don't think so but they are doubling there Download speed to make up for the price. The upload speed will stay the same.

Comcast in our area has been known to give deals when a consumer says they are switching to a competitor. I've had DSL before, and I'm not fond of it. Maybe because we are one of Comcast's 3mb areas right now.

Well, I went to a state farm agent they they insured our engagement ring for $12 per thousand, per year: $60/year to cover a $5,000 ring... they said it covers theft, if a diamond falls out... anything! Inside or out of the home.

often things like jewelry or computers need to be added on to the policy explicitly -- otherwise they may not be covered

1) American Family covers my wifes jewelry. To prove the value of the engagement / wedding ring, I had to show them the appraisal, but it is fully covered.

2) $686 / year is pretty good for 2 car liability. I think I pay $325 / year on my '92 Crown Vic for two 23 year-old adults.

You usually have to get a rider added to your renters'/homeowners' to cover the engagement ring. It's usually not terribly expensive.

1) Thanks guys, I plan on talking to an angent soon, I just hadnt heard back from them yet to ask.

Is renters insurance worth getting if you have maybe 3k worth of items in the home? If there is a fire am I held responsible for the damage to the apartment, or is that covered by the apt complex? (probably a question I should be asking the apt complex heh)

2) thanks

3) Well, I guess its worth a shot.

Renter's insurance is sometimes referred to as "Contents" insurance. You are only responsible for the contents of the apartment. Any damage to the actual structure is the management's problem, for which they probably have their own insurance.

You may think you only have $3000, but there is a lot you don't think about. Imagine if that all burned up. You'd have to get new furniture, new computer, new clothes, new appliances....it adds up quickly.

Renter's insurance also covers you if someone is injured in your apartment, as well as damage from exploding pipes, A/C leaks, stuff like that.

It's usually like $100/year for $30k coverage.

Well worth it.

The coverage amount usually depends on the area you live in. I pay $80 / year for 20k, plus $10 / year for the wedding ring.

Yeah, you want to get covered well above what you estimate to be the value of your items. Most apartment complexes or townhomes require renters insurance, in my experience.

The quote I got was 133 for 23k, not bad.

I guess I see what you mean about it adding up. Most of my furniture I got for free when in college, spring cleaning days in a rich town = good pickings.

All of my stuff plus clothing probably only cost me 5k, but it would cost at least 20k to replace it all...

Ask them if they are giving you a discount, since you have your auto and renters with them. Sometimes, they won't tell you about it, but they should give you a significant discount on your auto portion, just for carrying that extra policy with them. :)

I pay 100 a month for Cable Internet, HBOs, and digital cable w/ converter.

600 dollars a year for two cars is pretty damn good. Even though collision is always the biggest of the claim makers. My insurance would be cut by 2/3rds if I took collision off.

But then again I live in NJ.

I figured that we would have to pay another 1-1.5k a year for collision. We drive like 6 miles a day each, and our cars combined value is like 2k or maybe 2500. If we manage not to get in a wreck for 2 years, then we save money by not getting collision on our insurance. We are both pretty safe drivers, so hopefully if we ever get in a wreck it wont be ruled our fault :)

with insurance get it in writing that jewelry is specifically covered and if it is, get it writing what they will cover your ring at.

Covering jewelry is one thing (a lot of policies require riders), but when they pay out $300 for a $3000 ring it sux.

3) Good news. I paid 21.99 a month for 4 months for cable internet. Now it is set to rise back up to 58... I called in, got hooked up with basic cable TV, and an itnernet promotional deal, so Im at 19.99 month for 6 months for cable internet, 29.99 a month for 3 months, then a reduced cost of 42 a month after that, plus 10 a month for basic cable...

so 30/month vs 58/month, plus Im getting basic cable (antenna here sucks) for 6 months, then 40/month for 3 months, then 52 a month (at which point I will probably go back and try to get a better deal again)

yippy.
