How are they powered? I am thinking about a 5.1 or 7.1 system and obviously running wires means that its not DIY for me and professional installation is too expensive. So looking at wireless rear speaker. But wondering how are they powered? there is no outlet anywhere near where I want to put them, so even powering them through regular power wires will mean professional installation...

So wondering how they are powered? any battery options?

If it was that big of a hassle I wouldn't even worry about it. The value of surround is a bit overrexaggerated. It adds some level of atmosphere to the movie, but nothing like have a dialed in front stage and quality subwoofer will.

But to answer your question, most wireless adapters will require a power outlet in the rear of the room to run the wifi receiver and drive the speakers.

I don't know about battery powered speakers. I can't help but think they would be woefully underpowered and constantly requiring a battery replacement.

I know a friend who bought a cheap wireless setup (5.1) and on black friday and was utterly disappointed with it.

The rear speakers needed a power outlet. The setup itself didnt actually include the wireless portion....that was an extra like 50-75 bucks. It sounded ok but the extra hassle and fact you have power cords is meh.

Like Vi-edit said the front is the most important anyways. if i remember right on averages 70% of content passes through the front three and only like 30 percent to the rear. Some movies might be a bit more and others less. Kind of the reason youll see a lot of people get nice full towers for the fronts and then just small cheaper bookshelves for the rears.

You still have to power them by plugging them in. The only thing you are avoiding is a long speaker cable from the amp to the speaker.

I would just find flat speaker cables and try to hide them.

I was just thinking about getting wireless rear speakers myself, but it sounds like it may not be worth it. I do like having the rear speakers, I feel it can add quite a bit depending on the film.

Totally not worth it. Especially when you need to either spend tons of money for good transmitter/receiver or get some cheap-ass transmitter/ receiver for the signal and then still have to plug them into the wall to power them.

LOL, sorry, looking for front only suggestions, budget is $1000 tops.

are you saying you have no interest whatsoever in wiring surround speakers? Not that hard to hide speaker wires.

Anyway, can you provide your room setup? like floor plan type and can you get to the baseboards?

http://www.amazon.com/Mirage-Nanosat...971765&sr=1-12

That is a nice set of speakers for the price.

or this one

humm, here is an interesting combo

there is always the trusty newegg energy speaker "sale" to fall back on.

Are you looking at it more for TV or movies? A lot of TV is still shot in stereo so getting a 2.1 system may be fine. If you are watching a lot of movies, you will want to use a 3.1 system.

How big are you comfortable with for speakers? Larger speakers will (from a comparable vendor) give better sound then smaller ones. The Mirage speakers are nice, and certainly do a great job in comparison to other small speakers - but like many small speakers lack range (though yes the subwoofer will help here).

As sdifox asked can you explain how the room is setup/arranged? Is it an open room? The mirage do a great job of filling a room because of the way they disperse sound - but in a small room or one that has some echo to it that may not be a good thing.

@talion83
I definitely want 3.1 but speakers should not be too big. preferably no more than 2ft tall and balck...

here is a rough floor plan

so what is wrong is running speaker cables along the baseboards, then to the sectionals and then to the rear speakers?

I have done a room like that before and what I did was place the speakers under the couch in the back facing out at floor level towards the rear of the room, letting the room reflect the sound back to the viewers. It sounded better than some setups I have heard that have the speakers on the walls.
