I have a P4 2.4ghz (533) chip with stock fan and heatsink in my current motherboard, but I recently sprung for a dual-DDR motherboard (ASUS P4P800 :D :D :D!) which will be arriving within the week, and I have a question regarding the heatsink.

When I first got the heatsink with the retail cpu, it had a thin metalic sliver, almost like very thin tinfoil, attached to the bottom of the heatsink. I left it on, and didnt even use the Arctic Silver III that I have. It has been working dandy, but I figure I probably can't re-use that little metallic pad because it even peeled when i barely touched it with my fingernail before.

So what should i do? peel the whole thing off the bottom and clean it off? is it easy to do this? anything special cleaning agents i will need? any hints? I have arctic silver III as I said, so I plan to just use that..

I have heard you can lap the surface of the heatsink but I dont think I am going to do anything like that.. dont have the fine sandpaper, and I am lazy

Any suggestions and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Peel it off. I don't remember how I did mine, but dont use anything sharp or metallic. Use the Arctic Silver.
