Question about RAM

I was browsing the forums trying to search for a thread that talks about finding out what CAS your RAM runs at so I am able to purchase the right RAM making 1gig.

I have an ASUS A8N-SLi Deluxe mobo with the RAM being PQI turbo purchased in March '05. Whenever I go into the boot menu (restard press del) and look up the overclocking options where the CAS latency might show, all it gives me are choices to set the RAM at (AUTO, CAS1, CAS2 etc..), not what the RAM is currently set at.

Also, it should not make much of a difference from what I have read, but just to double check, it is ok to have 4X512mb? I do not overclock.

Thanks again

Download CPU-Z, and run it. The "memory" tab will show you what timings your ram is currnetly running at. The "SPD" tab will show you what the factory settings are.

Also, it should not make much of a difference from what I have read, but just to double check, it is ok to have 4X512mb? I do not overclock.
Not if you have an athlon 64. Their memory controller will drop the memory to ddr 333 if you fill all 4 slots. If you don't have an athlon then don't worry about it.

Ok this is turning out to be a little worse than I thought. I thought I originally bought CAS2 RAM. I am sorry I am new to this but can you make sense of this. I thought I originally bought 2-3-3-5 or something low like that. CPU-Z tells me I am running, in order of the memory tab: 2.5-4-4-8-12 command rate 2T, DRAM idle timer 16clocks.

I am running an A64 3000+ Winchester. Is running 4X512mb going to be much of a performance issue? I am definitely a gamer, not hardcore but enough to try and squeeze out as much performance without overclocking.

The timing for some memory modules need to be set manually in your bios with athlon 64's, which is no sweat. I had to do this also. Just find out what you modules are rated at from the manufacture's homepage, then enter bios and configure accordingly.

Is that a socket 754 or 939? If it's 939, then you want to run the memory in dual channel @ ddr 400. To do this you can only have 2 modules in specific memory slots. Consult your motherboard manual for that. If you run 4 modules they will drop to drr 333, which would be a performance hit.
