question about RAM density

I have an old mobo (made back when SDRAM was first being introduced - it's DIMM slots take EDO RAM *or* SDRAM.

Anyways, I just tried a 32MB PC66 DIMM in the mobo - and the mobo just won't recognize it. The RAM density is marked on the DIMM - 4Mx64. Could this RAM be "too dense" for the motherboard to see it?

If it was a density problem, wouldn't only *part* of the DIMM show up, or is it possible that the DIMM would not be recognized?

cheers...
