Now we're at the stage for putting trim, but when my dad did it there is a gap between the trim and the wall, should that be there?

How big of a gap? How did he attach the trim (you mean baseboard?)? Can he caulk it?

Are we talking about quarter molding at the top and baseboard molding at the bottom?

If so, then no.

1/16" gap? 1/8" gap? Does it vary? Is the trim cocked? Is it glued, or nailed? What type of trim, what material, what size?

should use some sorta filler. should be in the trim section of the hardware store. you gotta install trim first before painting walls etc. gotta use trim caulk or wahtever to fill in the cracks.

You 'bout ready to take a picture yet, lugnut?

Too, lazy to take a picture, but not to lazy to clutter the board with yet another useless topic... typical.

On crown moulding yes. I'm still confused as to what you mean though. Crown is angled so there is space behind it.

one requires going down two floors, the other requires clicking the mouse.

Oh beleive me, I know. This place went down the shltter years ago, thanks to the lazy vermin infesting it, and leaving their droppings everywhere.
