lookin to not go crazy with price... but if i got a 200-300 dollar mp3/cd player deck.. and 4 new speakers for inside a car.. would that be good enough.. or do car systems really need bass? :D

lookin for probably a 99 mercury cougar btw...

would llike to spend less then 700 bucks.. less if not necessary

get what you can afford. easiest...half ok sounding bass tube would work fine if your not a audiophile....get a amp to drive it too. nothings worse than weak systems.

Humm.. don't expect `bass` for 200-300 dollars.. you'd be lucky to get a decent mp3 deck for that.

If you want to get a sub, then your going to have to get an Amp to power it, plus run power wire, RCA's and ground.

I would suggest looking into JVC for MP3 decks.. they have some really nice ones for a good price.. a lot of people say they are hard to beat for the price.

I would just get a decent compoenent set with the deck, it won't give you knock your breath out bass or anything, but you can get some nice upper/mid-range.. but to be honest.. I personally don't look for caraudio stuff for this price range, so i'm not really sure whats good for that price range. I would suggest taking a look through some forums.. they are filled with a lot of good information.. try forum.elitecaraudio.com, www.termpro.com, forum.sounddomain.com.

Go with .. JVC head unit (or Kenwood), Pioneer speakers or Kenwood or Infinity or Polk Audio speakers (6x9 for the back, 2 way minimum else 3 way) and for the front put what fits easiest and a 2 way speaker.. a 5 1/4 should fit.

As for a sub get a bazooka tube (passive else active) i believe the JVC's have a sub out which takes care of that..

700 should cover everything .. including install. Many places do install for free when you buy a package like that. I know Bestbuy does that, and so does circuitcity and The Good Guys stores.

Here's what I would go for with $700:

JVC SH99 MP3 Player - $230
Precision Power 4ch Amp (PCX-440) - $230

And depending on what kind of speakers your car can fit, I'd get

5.25 component speakers (infinity is cheap and sounds decent) - $100
6x9's (again, going with infinity) - $100
(you may have to drill out the holes for your tweeters)

Total is about $660 plus $40 extra for wiring (assuming you do the install yourself, which isn't very difficult). You will get SOME bass with this system, although it won't be felt outside the car. With this setup, the HU will run cool since your using an external amplifier. If you decide to add a subwoofer later on down the road, you can use your current amp to power the sub (and yes, it will power two 12's with ease because I have this amp and it is VERY NICE, CLEAN AND POWERFUL) and use the headunit's internal amp to power the speakers. But if your not a bass freak, the 6x9's should suffice. Its all about expanding later on when your not satisfied with what you have :) and this setup will allow you to do just that.
