what sort of education do you need? i'm guessing some bachelors degree and med school for few years

is this all they do?.. evalutating patients; assure quality and safe care for patients; prescribing of psychotropic medications

and get paid over 100k/year?

if so, where do i sign up!! :D

Psychiatrists are MDs so they require the same amount of training as any other doctor.

Prepare to be a student until you're almost 30.

And forget Sack...I think he was thinking of Psychologist. Those require much less education. They can still make decent money, and if you're in a state that's short of mental health practitioners, you may be able to prescribe limited meds. I think AZ and NM both have that benefit.

WRONG....

it does require an MD, so...
undergraduate degree (usually 4 years)
Med school (4 years)
residency (3-4 years depending on where you train)

and then you are done. your residency is completely focused in psych. you dont need any work experience after residency

is there a preference to which undergrad degree one should get?
I'm microbio right now but psychology seems like a better fit..... but if i don't into a medical school... psychology degree is worthless. Microbio degree is worthless too but not as much as a psych degree.

usually people major in a science like chem, or biology, but if your grades are good enough, you can basically major in anything. the only thing is you may be better prepared for med school with a degree in the sciences. What i mean is if you get a a degree in psych, your med school biochem class might be pretty hard.

If you want to be a shrink don't bother with psychology. As you mentioned it's otherwise a crap degree. Your concern should be first and foremost getting through medschool and bio is better for that than psyc. They'll teach you all the pscyh you need.

It's not an easy job and psychiatrists have a high stress rate (as do all MDs).

It is possible to get a psych degree in science. I know cause I got my bachelor of science with psych as my major :D The vast majority of psych degrees are arts though, no doubt about it.

this is true, you will learn all the psych you need in med school. as far as stress, psych is probably one of the least stressful things you can do with an M.D., but is also definitely one of the lowest paid medical subspecialties

but for me... it sure beats slicing people up.. dying in front of you, etc. I did a job shadow with a neurosurgeon couple years back.... he probably makes a lot of money but no matter how much money they make, i would never do that kind of job. Plus he seemed stressed out.. tired of his job.

Well, I'm well paid on mine too, but it's still a worthless degree. ANY degree is better than none and in that sense all degrees are equal, but in terms of the relative worth of degrees I place psych above all arts backgrounds (philosophy, english, sociology, etc.), but lower than the other ones (engineering, physics, business etc.), because you can't DO anything with a psychology degree except go into clinical pscyhology and a select few other fields that draw specifically upon it.

You're doing well because you have a degree - I don't think it's because you're using your psychology degree per se.

neurosurgery is at about the top of the stress ladder. anesthesiology is pretty damn stressful too. psych definitely isnt a bad job. i have a couple of friends in psych residency now and they love it. also, psych residency is one of the easiest residencies. whereas a surgical resident puts in 80-120 hours a week (rule is supposed to be only 80, but that rarely happens), psych residents might put in less than 40

thanks for the info....I have a lot to learn from you....I'm only in my second year, started with engineering but switched to microbio.
My freshman year grades weren't so good... because I slacked and didn't study. A little less than 3.0... but I got my act together this semester.. I've been doing nothing but studying pretty much. I enjoy learning about biology... and psychology. I actually enjoy looking at those Sample MCAT and PCAT tests... and doing the biology problems.

How true is this statement.. I heard it from couple people. "If you get a grade lower than a B in any of your courses, you won't get into med school" ... I got two C's my freshman year :(
Hopefully no more of those.
