Hi,

I just bought an EVGA Supernova G2 750W PSU today. I bought it because I'm going to be swapping out my GTX 650 Ti for a Sapphire R9 280. The R9 has a recommended min PSU of 750W. However, with my system, I'm wondering if I should have gone with the Supernova 650W.

The system ...

i7 4790 (non k, so no OC)
Gigabyte Ga H97 D3H mobo
4x8 GB DDR3
Sapphire Vapor X R9 280X (no plans to OC)
1 x 850 EVO SSD
3 x 7200 HDD's
several USB 3.0 backups all with their own power

I'm not an overclocker. I'll very occasionally play WoW or Tomb Raider, but mainly I'm editing with Sony Vegas, and then just web related stuff.

I think the PSU is decent - just not sure about the wattage. I got it at Amazon and the 3rd party seller said I could return it and xchange, no prob. Should I exchange it for the Supernova G2 650W?

Thanks

How much less does the G2 650W cost? Keep in mind that the 750W unit has 10 year warranty while the 650W unit has 7 year warranty. That 3 year extra warranty perhaps counts for something even if you don't actually need that much power.

Technically your system would be absolutely fine with a quality 550 watt unit. R9 280X Vapor-X = ~227W when gaming, plus around 100W for the rest of the system, at most. It is possible however that a 650+ watt unit will run a little bit quieter at the estimated 330W full system load.

I'm in Canada. There was a good sale on the G2 750W's on Amazon.ca ~ $50 off. So the G2 650W would only be about $10 less. Not a huge factor there. True about the warranty, but 7 or 10 years is still good, so that doesn't really factor into the decision as much as the power.

Are you saying the 650W would be quieter than the 750W? How so? My main concern is that my system runs on such low draw that the 750W would not be efficient, or just very underutilized. Or is that not such a big concern with good quality PSU's like this Supernova G2 series?

for a difference of $10 not worth the hassle to change it. Stick with the 750W, at least you have a good SLI unit in case you ever decide to run two graphics cards in the next 10 years ;)

Pretty sure I wrote "650W+" and was comparing to 550W.

My main concern is that my system runs on such low draw that the 750W would not be efficient, or just very underutilized.

EVGA 750W G2 is very efficient at low watts, you have absolutely nothing to worry about there. https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/EVGA/SuperNOVA_G2_750/6.html

There is no harm in underutilizing a PSU.

This is truly a do not sweat the small stuff. You did fine 10 more is most likely worth it. The 10 year warranty is good evga does rmas pretty well.
I always like head room for my psu's. I would have done the same thing as you
and I must of built or upgraded 500 pc's and macs by now.

Ten year warranty huh? I got money says they have NEVER done one on anything that is ten years old. Hence why they offer it........Though I'm certain there service is stellar.

Of course they've never done an RMA on a ten year old piece of hardware, because they haven't had a ten year warranty on any of their products for ten years yet. And this is not why they offer ten year warranty; the reason is that it simply gives them an edge over the competition. Who wouldn't rather have ten year warranty unit as opposed to 5 or 7? It's simply a great way for them to gain a foothold in the competitive PSU market.
