Question about proxies

Genx87

Lifer
If somebody is visiting your msgboard but using a different proxy everytime you ban their IP. Is there anyway you can still track them down or are you stuck hoping they run out of proxies to use?

They have to connect to the Internet somewhere, but to find them you might have to fight with several proxy services in order to get their IP address. Depends on how bad you want to track them down.

So basically we cant do much?

What about running a script embedded on the site? After doing a little research it sounds like you may be able to change proxy settings within IE using activeX controls if the security level isnt set high enough?

It has been some time since I did any kind of scripting or web programming. Anybody have an idea on how you could do this?

And yeah, this little punk has annoyed us long enough that we want to finally track him down.

Even if you could do that, it's possible he's using a transparent proxy tool. One that inspects outgoing packets destined for a specific port and redirects them to the proxy without the app knowing about it. I don't know about any that run on your desktop because I've never used it, but I know that it's possible.

I'm not saying don't try it, but don't get your hopes up too high either.
