Is this $300 price going to be around for a while or will these continue to fall?

Also, I asked this over in teh Hot Deals section, but I don't think anyone knows:

Is this card overkill for someone who wants to play random games (everquest, Need For Speed, Doom 3, Quake 4 ) at 1024x768 on a 17inch CRT monitor? The only true video card I've ever had was a TNT2 with 32 megs of ram. Right now I'm running with xpress 200 onboard graphics.

Also, does it need a specific type of power source? Mine is just a generic one that came with the case(400W) running an amd 64 3000, 1 gig ram, 3 hard drives, 2 cd drives.

I'm really wanting this to last 3 or so years: Reasonable thinking? Also, the VIVO: Does this make it a good media center card?

(1) Yes, prices will continue to fall... how quickly depends on wether the next-gen cards are really released in January or not.

(2) While you don't really need a 7800GT for the games you mentioned at that resolution, unless you want to spend another $300+ in 5-6 months, its the card you want to go with.

(3) Its very likely you need to grab a new power supply.. a quality Antec or Fortron 400-500 watt model should do the job.. don't be deceived by the ratings on your generic, my bet is that a good 300 watt PSU actually puts out more usable power.

(4) Don't know enough about the VIVO features of the 7800GT to answer this one... sorry.

If you want to get a good deal on a 7800gt try to get in on the EVGA deal where they give you a free motherboard with it. Check at Newegg and Tiger Direct to see if the deal comes back on. That's what I did and effectively paid $275 Can. after you subtract the value of the free motherboard.

I thought about that, but I currently have an MSI rs480. So, no need for the board.
