Usually, insurance doesn't cover brand name drugs under their formulary. That is usually why you get generic drugs instead of brand name. As for differences there usually isn't, sometimes even the original maker of the drug makes the generic version. (I have been working in a pharmacy for the past 20 years. And currently on my way to pharmacy school)
