question about power and my nvidia card

i bought a dell off a hot deal a while back here

upgraded it with an XFX 9600GT video card

it has a tiny dell power supply, but ive found that dell and hp powersupplies always perform above their rating and that video cards always require above what they ask for. and the 9600 isnt a super high end card...

anyway, the card and computer ran great for a while. i ran current games at high res and detail. then suddenly out of nowhere performance died and i had to drop res and detail way way lower

i ignored it for a while because i dont play games much.

recently, i decided to update my nvidia drivers and now nvidia tells me that my card is not receiving enough power and i need to plug in the auxillary power plug

i had never plugged the extra power in!!

it said the card was running in reduced performance mode, and suddenly everything made sense. but now i have these questions:

1. why did the card run fine at first? (does the PCI bus share power with the PCI Express bus? if so that might make sense as i installed a wireless card later and that might coincide with the drop in performance)

2. the warning said something about possible damage to the card, but seems like dumbness to me. can undervolting a card cause damage to it? (its been like this for 6 months)

3. is there any utility that lets me check how much power the card is currently getting?

Remember, just because your power supply runs it fine for a while, it also may be that your power supply is running at maximum wattage and will eventually fail or degrade over time. Sounds like you really need a power supply upgrade and your old power supply is starting to flake out.

im not necessarily worried about that. remember the video card is supposed to have two power sources plugged in. if it managed to run ok with just the power off the pci express bus for a while, then it was performing above what was expected. thanks for not answering any of my questions :p

Assuming it came with the PSU which has the 6pin power connector, you're good with a 9600 GT card. (The Insp 530 comes with one of two different PSU's).

If you have now plugged the 6pin power connector into the card, and everything is running good performance wise, I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not sure of the answer to your 1st questions. The answer to the second question is "yes, possibly." As for the 3rd question, again, you're ok, no need to worry as long as everything is running fine now that the 6pin power connector is plugged in.
