My wive's step father may have opened something he should not have...sigh and although there are no obvious symptoms when he runs the online scan at security.symantec it reports There is a Trojan Horse.
C:\Program files\notebook maximizer\maximizer_startup.exe
is infected
with downloader.
he has PCcillin on his system and it did apparently quarantine 3 files that he deleted before he talked to me and he has no idea what they were and PCcillin now reports no problem found.
I am planing on having him run another scan with the F-Secure online scanner and the usual spyware scans. Is there a chance that a virus has infected this app. (it appears to be a power management app from Toshiba) or is there a chance it is a false positive?
Working with this is a little more difficult that usual for me as he is 300 miles away and VERY computer illiterate.

That is a false positive (FP). If it were in the c:\windows or \windows\system32 then I would be concerned.

Thanks, John for the confirmation now if I can get ATT to get my own connection to the net stable I will be happy. right now they appear to be having dns problems as some site work and some don't and it changes which is which. After talking with them there is a known problem in my area that is supposed to be resolded by 12:30 PDT, I hope they are right this is a drag.
