What ports do Windows Messenger program (not the service!) and local network browsing use?

MSN messenger: 1863
And SMB typically goes over 135/137-139

These could be wrong (especially the messenger port).

Well I didn't know them so any lead is better then what I had. :) Thanks!

Is there an online database of ports and what they do?

I believe iana controls the official list. There are plenty of applications that don't care about that list though, and some are user configurable.
