Question about Police Report involving car vandalism

Today, I get back from class, eagerly awaiting the begining of the weekend. As I approach my car I notice some shards on the floor and in a second it all hit me like a ton of bricks.

Someone smashed my driver's side tail light! I looked around and found no other damage. It was just the lense and the housing remained intact. However, I still called the police to file a report, just to be safe in the event that this happens again.

A police man comes and inspects the damage. He thought someone threw something at it that caused it to shatter. We fill out a report and I list the damage to be $80.

My question is; Since I filed a report and obviously not going through insurance, will my company(geico) find the report somehow and use it to raise my rates? I have comprehensive insurance BTW.

Thx, for reading. If I ever catch those bastards!!:|

As I recall, you're rich enough to afford a nice car and shun the ones who can't afford a nice car.. Who cares, it's an $80 taillight

You called the police for this?!! What a waste of time. Go to the station and fill out a report.

Don't waste the police's time for something so trivial.

The damage won't exceed your deductible, so you'll end up paying out of your own pocket for this one.

I know, it's out of pocket. I'm just worried that the insurance looks through police reports and will see this accident and raise my rates, even though it isn't my fault. The police that came was campus police, they are state police assigned to my campus. So I didn't waste anyone's time.

No, actually I don't shun anyone. I just think it's ridicolous to hand wash a car that is worth $500.

So it's better to spend 5 times as much for the wash by sending it through a carwash?

Washing a car is not simple cosmetic. Washing inhibits corrosion among other things.

$10 will get you a car wash with wax and polish. How is that five times? I'm just saying, it takes a while to hand wash and not to mention wax it. So if your car is isn't in the best shape to begin with, why not just save the time and get an auto wash?

I completely agree. I also think that if you aren't going to buy from Banana Republic (and not the sale rack), then you shouldn't bother washing your clothes. Its not like anyone cares about poor people anyway.

I'm not saying that at all! I don't even get a hand wash on my own car! I'm just saying if your car is crappy and in not so good shape, what would be the difference? An obvious exception would be is if your car is in imaculate condition, despite it's worth. Then I would agree with the hand wash.

And $10 will buy you a large bottle of car wash soap and a can of carnauba wax that can let you hand wash the car 25-30 times. Let's see here, $10 for one single wash or $10 for 25-30 hand washes... Which one's significantly more expensive? It's far, far, far cheaper to hand wash a car than it is to take it through a car wash.

That is true. But my time is worth about $50 per hour, so that would about even it out.

Anyway if a insurance company went through police reports to find non claimed reports or accidents having to do with a car, that would be shady.

YEAH! :| Their time is better spent eating donuts and drinking coffee or bullying the locals!

Time is also an expense. Enough with hand wash controversy. I think it will stay with me as long as I post here.

A broken tail-light on a parked car isn't considered "an accident" by insurance companies. Also, since you're paying out of pocket for the repair, you won't even have a claim on file with your insurance co. for the incident.

You have nothing to worry about.

For a tail light, I agree...

My friend had three side windows on her car smashed. A leather coat, a laptop (under the coat), and her running shoes were stolen out of the thing. The police told her to fill out a report on the Web.

That seemed a little odd to me (although I have no idea what they'd do if they actually showed up to invistigate).

How about a house? Will police come to investigate a break in and burglary for that? Is it so different?

Nice. You've got about $50.000.00 worth of posts on here, Einstein.
