Question about police auctions

Are there any sites online that list them and information regarding them? Some of you on here seem to know quite a bit about them and it seems like that'd be the best place to look for a cheap car. If anyone could point me in the right direction it'd be appreciated, and I'm sure others here have the same question as well.

Call your local Sherrifs dept, and Local State police,
ask when an auction is,and what the rules are.

Your right near the State capitol. ;)

IMPORTANT NOTICE: AUCTION SCHEDULE CHANGED FOR 2005
Due to declining numbers of mobile equipment available for sale at auction, the auction schedule has been changed for 2005 to every other month. Auction months include February, April, June, August, October, and December. It is expected the surplus equipment sales will increase if and when the current purchasing ban is lifted and at that time the auction will return to the monthly schedule. Please monitor this website for updates or contact the auction yard at (530) 757-6832.

Every other month a public auction is held to dispose of state vehicles and equipment. Currently, all auctions are scheduled on the 3rd Wednesday every other month and are located at 5950 Chiles Road, Davis, CA 95616 (map and directions).

Auction Dates and Terms and Conditions of Sale.

Telephone number: (530) 757-1063
Bob Turk, Auction Manager

Please note that auctions are subject to cancellation or change. Attendees are encouraged to call before coming out to the auction lot.

A list of items for the current auction and the following auction are available by clicking on one of the following two auction dates. Items with a status of "Ready" versus "Not Ready" are more likely to be available for bid in the current auction. For a more accurate list of what will be available for bid at the current auction, visit this site a week to a couple of days before every auction.

I've been to a few of them and there isn't crap there. The car dealers get to pick through the selection before the public auctions even begin. Then at the public auctions the taxi companies buy every police cruiser. What you're left with is junk.

If the vehicle was worth more than you can buy it for, you can bet that a car dealer already bought and sold it. You're never going to find a Ferrari for $500 or even a new Corolla for $10k.

Anyone besides Skoorb have any positive experiences? Thanks to caveman for the info.

If I wanted to go this Wednesday, could I go and not bid at all, just watch?

Judging by the auction we just had a week ago, I would NOT recommend buying a car there unless you're looking for some serious fix-uppage.

I went to one on saturday, I got a pretty good deal on my vehicle. I got a 98 ford contour V6 manual with 86,000 miles for $1850. Power everything, exterior was in pristine condition, interior just needed a detail, it is in good condition now. After the 10% auction fee, taxes, and Licence/fees, total came to right around $2250. I went during the inspection time(2 hours before the start time), found the vehicles under 90k miles, started them up, ran the AC, and wrote down which ones I liked that I figured would be in my price range ($2500). I went home and checked kbb values and ebay values, checked the VINs on carfax (i bought an unlimited package) then went armed with that info. It's a gamble, because you don't know how well the transimission is, but at least you can start them up, and see how the engine runs. I picked the manual trans because if there was something wrong with it, it would be cheaper to fix than an automatic. If you can, try to account for the fact that maybe the trans is bad, worst case scenario. so tack on that much that you think it might need in repairs. I'll be selling it in four months, just need it for my g/f's new training program. I'll at least make my money back, which is all I care about. THere's a good chance I'll make money on the deal if nothing breaks down. Check Craigslist for a mechanic that will do inspections, opr even better if you can bring a mechanic with you.

you can go and not bid, some places require a deposit of up to $500 that is refundable if you don't bid. The one I went to did not have that requirement.

here is some good info I gleaned from my research:
