question about "Pirates of Carribean...."

I have a question about a scene in the movie for you guys who watched it. In one scene, where the main character and the pirate were escaping, trying to save the girl, the two escaped by putting a boat on top of their heads, and walked under the ocean. While they were *in* the water, the ocean only came up to their necks. anybody remeber that scene?

Now what is the logic behind that?? How is that possible?? Or is that just fake?

The air trapped underneath the boat couldn't escape from underneath and so left a pocket that was not filled by water?

Find large body of water, find bucket, put push bucket down with the hole facing down making sure not to movie ot sideways, note pocket of air. Obviously Pirates might go a bit too far, as they probably wouldnt be able to hold a boat down..

It's possible. Umm, to test, get a bowl (make sure it has no cracks and is relatively deep, tape a napkin to the top (make sure it won't hang down), and place it in a tub of water. Place it on top of the water evenly, and you'll see that the napkin won't get wet when you pick up the bowl (again, evenly). It keeps a air bubble in there.

Yeah, that would work, assuming that each of those people weighed about a ton. They weren't nearly heavy enough to hold that much air under water.

goddamnit, wasted my time 😛

I'll tell you what's 100% not possible. When Jack takes the girl hostage, and then escapes from the British troops, he gets up on a platform and then uses the chain between his wrists to slide down a rope to somewhere else. The problem is that if your wrists are connected by a chain, you can't get the chain in a position to slide down the rope.

theoretically its possible, but Leetman is right there's no way they could hold an entire boat down like that. Or push it all the way to the bottom of the ocean without it moving sideways at all.

Yeah, but you at least expect movies to obey the basic law of matter not being able to move through other matter without some sort of explanation as to why, in that particular situation, matter can move through other matter. Did we get an explanation? Of course not. We were expected to just watch the movie like so many sheep. Baaaaa.

I don't remember that exact scene, but he could have thrown part of the chain over the top of the line and held onto it that way.

That's right. He could have looped the slack in the chain over and grasped the chain with one of his hands and used it that way. Also, is the displacement of a boat more than say 300 lbs. when it's capsized?

He threw part of the chain over and grabbed it with his hand. The explanation is that you weren't paying close enough attention.

that about covers it. But if you want to talk about something that is not logical...watch the scene where Depp's hands are manicled and during his escape he gets his hand around the rope that he slides down. There is no way he could have done that unless he took of the manicles and hung it around the rope and than shackled it again. Do you guys know what scene I am talking about?

Sort of, look down the thread...............

EDIT: too late someone asked about the chains already.

no..he didn't loop it over..I am pretty sure.

read the whole thread next time, and if he threw the rope over which i think he did if i remember then its perfectly feasable. and the boat thing is possible if they had superhuman strength to hold the boat uneder water, thats how those diving submarines are able to open the diving hatch at while submerged..

Just watched the chain part again. He threw the slack in the chain over and grabbed it. It's quite obvious when you pay attention. I thought thats the way he did it but had to check it out again to be sure.

Ummm... I'd say yes. If the displacement would have been enough to float with two full sized men in it, then it's too much for two full sized men to hold underwater while they walk on the ocean floor..

Boats and chains ya'll have a problem with. But cursed, undead pirates that appear as only skeletons when exposed to moonlight you have no qualms about. 😉
