Get better 2GB ram and you can play any current game on mid-high settings easy. And probably for a year you won't need to upgrade unless you MUST have everything maxed out. IF you are humble like me and don't mind playing games on low-mid you won't be upgrading for a few years :p

Another guy told me that the best modern games don't need over 768 mb of ram. And anything over 1024 is a waste.

He's silly, BF2 demands 2GB if you want to run at high settings.

That guy seems to know a lot about computers although his pc is very old.

Currently with the same configuration but with an athlon xp 3000+ I lag on farcry a lot. Farcry has some problems with it's crytek engine. It was supposed to run very well on a fx 5900 ultra.

Is pc 400 fast? Amd CPUs can't take anything more.

from my experience, bf2 certainly does not need 2gb of ram... providing you have the processor/video card combo to run it.. and personally if you want the best prices on ram, try either newegg.com or pricewatch.com... those always work for me

You need over a gig at this point if you're doing video editing and other multitasking work, but fast ram beats quantity in games once you reach a gig. The 6800GT can run BF2 with max settings on 1280x1024 (I've played with it), and thus it's a sexy card.

What is the rest of your rig?

Actually I had some games in mind that I wanted to play on very high settings. That's why I'm asking how will the above specs do.

that guy is an idiot. 1GB is not a waste and neither is 2GB especially if you use your machine for cad/cam, video editing, 3d modeling, etc...

wasn't it bill gates that said we will never need more than 640KB of memory...??

1GB is not a waste, it is what is needed to play BF2 and most other current gen games. sure 768MB was fine when the nforce2 came out a couple of years ago, but so was a xp2500 and 9700pro.

your friend is behind in the times and if i were you i wouldn't listen to him, he is probably jealous because you have a nice rig.

in all reality i play bf2 on my rig with 800x600 most setting on high a 4xAA and when i get out i can see the maxed amount of ram is ~950MB, including the os and my av and a couple of other small programs that are running. when the game is not running just the os idling is using ~220MB so there is ~730MB for the game with my low settings, you crank it up to 1280x1024 and turn on the eye candy and the ram will go up.

Turning graphics settings to the max WILL make BF2 hitch a bit with 1024mbs of RAM. These hitches usually can't be alleviated by a high end graphics card because they are the result of the system running out of memory and hitting the harddrive.

I tried battlefield demo on the highest settings at 1024*768 on my current xp and I didn't see a lot of lag. Just the game may pause for tenth of a second every once in a while. I noticed only as I'm turning at that time. And how many ram slots do the nforce 3 ultra motherboards have?

BF2 and 64 players during heavey movement or large action areas can easily go over a gig.

go to newegg and select motherboards and then set the filter to just show nf3 boards...

If you look at the newegg customer review on the motherboard there's some problem with the sata. What is that?
