do other culture'sl last names usually translate over to what kind of job your family did? I know the most common english names do, such as Smith and Miller.

Just a question that came to mind.

I'm still trying to figure out my last name. Some have said dressmaker, others leathermaker. These have been from Mexicans though, I need to here from a real Spanish person. :(

i wonder what kind of job Wang stands for

could be several things, but often times it's the first part of "emperor"

What about Nguyen? That one seems really common, too.

that and Xu were the ones that brought me to ask the question

Hmmm......all the more reason to use it in my opinion. It was fine for so long I can't even remember. It is what i heard all my life as a child. I have never thought Oriental was disparaging in any way and I have never used it in such a capacity. I hate PC and the thin skinned pansies that populate the world these days so I will continue to use that term if I choose.....with no offense intended as always.

I tend not to take offense at the word "oriental" these days but when I was a kid it was often used in a disparaging fashion toward me and my brother.

Professions, religious names or words, or simply words that sounded funny when they were forced to pick a last name.
