Question about OS and image back ups

I plan to install a new motherboard this weekend which is a different chipset from the old motherboard.

The old motherboard had an nvidia 650i chipset. The new motherboard has an intel chipset.

Nothing else is changing on the computer and I do have an external hdd and Norton ghost.

Can I in theory create an image of my hard drive and replace the mobo and load that image then install the drivers for the new chipset?

Or should I just do a clean install.

If I can do the whole image load I assume I can find that info somewhere in Norton's website or manuals.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

?? Why would you load the ghost image? Its a backup.

1. Use Ghost to make an image of your C drive.

2. Before changing the motherboard boot back into windows and remove all motherboard related software from Add\Remove Programs as well as uninstalling any devices in device manager that relate to the motherboard (chipset\usb\raid\sound\lan\etc)

3. Swap the motherboard, boot, and install the new drivers.

If all hell breaks loose you can always put the old mobo back in an restore the backed up image to your C drive and try again.

TheKub's method should work in most cases. But your OS, XP or Vista may need to be reactivated and depending on when it was last activated, may require a call to MS to do it.
