Question about Orthos

I've had Orthos (blend test) running for quite a few hours now after flashing to a newer BIOS and slightly changing my OC parameters, but it doesn't feel nearly as CPU intensive as it should be. I've got TrillianPro, Firefox, Excel, and other programs open, and none of them are running with any lag whatsoever. Granted, Orthos is using quite a bit of RAM (1.1/2GB), and is supposedly maxing both of my cores under task manager, but my system doesn't feel laggy at all. What's up with that?

Try running the Small FFTs test. See if that stresses it out any more. As far as I know Orthos is just a fancier GUI for Prime95, so it should be stressing it about as much as it can be stressed. You can also try OCCT (website) to see if it stresses any more than Orthos.

I've never used Orthos, but Prime95 on my system (before it went kaput) would run at Idle priority. That means (if I recall correctly) that it will use only CPU cycles that no other program requires. If you want your system to "feel" more stressed, try opening up the Task Manager and setting the priority to Normal or Below Normal.

996, just change your priority level in Orthos from 1 to 7 or 8. It won't feel like it isn't cpu-intensive anymore.;) An anecdote: I once set SP2004 to level 9 or 10, and forgot to disable the screensaver, which I had setup to require re-entering my password. After ~15 minutes of waiting for the screen where you enter the password, I just hit the reset button.

If I don't set priority to 7 or 8, does that mean my system isn't being stressed nearly as much as it should be by Orthos?

I've wondered about this also. I came to the conclusion that multitasking with Orthos in the background is easier than just running Orthos alone.
Because the parts of your CPU running FireFox and such are not being put to the test.

You'll notice if you're running Small FFT and then start another Orthos and run Blend at the same time, your Core temps will drop. Because now half your CPU is running the easier Blend. This is without any affinities set.

If I don't set priority to 7 or 8, does that mean my system isn't being stressed nearly as much as it should be by Orthos?
EDIT: No it just means Orthos will give up clock cycles to other processes which have a higher priority. So maybe, yes, based on what I said above.

To clarify. I would think that to fully stress the system you should only be running Orthos.

Yes, but that only applies if you are running other apps at the same time, even Internet explorer or other web browsers. If no other software is running, it makes no difference what priority you have Orthos set to run at.
