Question about ordering cell phone from Amazon

My friend ended up ordering This phone from amazon.

The thing is, that around here AT&T ends up charging roaming. Now he's only had the phone for two days, but he likes it. He got a phone with a service plan, and wants to keep the phone. They gave a discounted price of $150, than a bunch of mail in rebates. We do not plan on getting any rebates, but am wondering, will he be able to cancel the service plan, and still keep the phone for the price of $150? Will he have to pay more money if he wants to keep the phone?
 
Assuming that he's cancelling the service after the trial period is over, then he will have to pay the cancellation fee. But he will get to keep the phone. Amazon is pretty good with rebates, why don't you guys go with them?
 
hmm why dont you just return it and get the phone from your local area?

im sure it will cost less than $150 + cancellation fees..

and when i purchased my phone from amazon a year ago, i did receive my $100 rebate w/o any problems.
 
It's nothing about the rebates. The thing is that he likes the phone, but AT&T charges roaming rates around here. It's only been two days into the plan, and he wants to cancel, but the trial period is not yet over.
 
I think they'll ask him to return the phone, or else they will charge him the full retail price. Which wont be 150, but 200 or 300 or whatever it is.
 
if i remembered it, when i did it a year ago, i made the cancellation through amazon--not directly with my provider (mobileone...now tmobile)... so thusly i had to return the phone, then they processed the contract cancellation. i ended up only paying 3$ in charges.
 
Tell him to return the phone and switch to TMobile, they have the Sony Ericsson T610 which is the same thing as the T616 but is a sligtly different triband frequency (850, 1800, 1900) vs (900, 1800, 1900) Certain Tmobile plans don't have roaming fees, it's a free phone after rebates from Amazon.
 
If you go to the Amazon link, enter a zip, then click the "Select This Phone" button, they take you to the page where you choose your service plan. At the bottom, it says:
"Phone Price: $319.99 (without service activation)"

Aren't AT&T phones locked to their network? To use it on T-Mobile or Cingular, he'd have to get it unlocked.

Who is he thinking of switching to? There is currently no advantage to bringing your own equipment in the US. Everyone makes you sign at least a one-year contract, so you might as well take the promotional-price phone from the carrier you want.

He doesn't really care it seems. He's thinking of switching to Cingular, and he knows he has to get it unlocked.
