Question about online sports gambling (wtf is a 'run line?')

Phokus

Lifer
Can someone explain the 'run line' to me?

I see this: http://www.wsex.com/line/BASEBALL.html

For example:

Run Line
San Diego: Williams +1.5 (-220)

San Francisco: Lowry -1.5 (+180)

Ok, i think i understand the numbers in the parenthesis, if you plunk down 220 down on san diego, you'll win $100, while if you plunk down 100 on San Francisco, you'll win 180, right?

How do you interpret the +1.5 and -1.5 run line though?

That is how many runs they expect the pitcher to win/lose by, IIRC.

ok, i sorta thought that, but how do you interpret it? Like the -1.5 san fran... so if san fran wins by more than 1.5 runs, then you win if you bet san fran?

Same with san diego, if the pitcher wins by at least 1.5 runs, then san diego wins?

bump for someone that knows for sure.

I thought it just meant (using your example) that Lowry would be favoured by 1.5 runs. I'm sure you can wager on it, but I thought it was just to denote the favourite.

There's gotta be some OT sports betting ppl that can answer this definitively...

I can answer all your questions. San Fran -1.5 means they MUST win by 1.5 runs or more, if they win by just 1 run, you LOSE. If you pick the oppisite of that, you can add 1.5 runs to other teams score, so they must WIN or lose by only a run. The +180 is the juice or vig, its adjusted becasue san fran is lot likely to win by more than a run according to them. Now you could do the money line and get rid of the spread. Post more questions if you have some.
