Is the only difference between this and the regular retail copy the price? I want to buy it from Newegg, because the academic version is considerably cheaper, but I also want to make sure I can apply the latest f Office XP service packs. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks

Although I do not have the XP version of Office, I do own 2000 Standard Academic, and there are no limits placed on upgrades. As far as I know Academic and non-Academic versions are identical in functionality. I believe it is safe to assume that it is simply the price tag that is different...

How will you produce a valid student/teacher ID for an online purchase, though? Do they even ask for it?

They're the same aside from the license. BTW, you can buy the academic version for $15 here at my (and many others) university.

$15! No catch? I go to a local community college, I wonder if they have this...

Most community colleges don't offer it for $15. Reason being, you can sign up for one class at a community college with no real entrance requirements for maybe $100 (sometimes less). It would be too easy for someone to sign up just so they can get a student ID and buy ridiculously cheap software. It's not so much of an issue at 4 year schools because you have to apply and be accepted, and pay a lot larger tuition before you get your student ID card.

But, yeah, if you can get it for $15, there's no catch, same as any other acedemic license.
