Wouldn't I have access to the exact same newsgroups if I went through my provider, Verizon, as opposed to Easynews (or Giganews, etc)? Everything seems the exact same in terms of certain groups and the articles except once in awhile I can't find a group that others say exist. What's the dealio? Am I just using a lame-ass newsreader (GrabIt!)?

Nope, usually your ISP has a limited selection of newsgroups compared to a full service provider such as Giganews.

They do this to keep costs down and to censor some of the raunchy newsgroups that only weirdos frequent anyways.

In theory, yes but some do not carry those with low volume or those they consider to be offensive.

Surprisingly Verizon's retention time has been VERY good compared to the usual 1-2 days that other providers have. This is a problem if I can't access a newsgroup that I need. Err... it's an Alcoholic Anonymous newsgroup. That's it  I don't want to pay for newsgroups. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

There may be an e-mail address at your ISP you can write to and request your pr0n -- I mean AA --newsgroup. If you're not to embarassed to ask ;)
