What is a PAR file?

Parchive parity files (or par files for short) create redundant data that can be used later in case parts of the original data is lost or corrupted. Par files allow file level recovery of data. That is, out of a group of many files, if a limited number of files are lost or corrupted, they can be recovered. These files will have the extensions of .par, .p01, .p02 etc.

They are parity files. Download quickpar to open them. If you have a missing rar, quickpar will tell you how many parts you would need to generate it.

For example, lets say you're missing gaypr0n15.rar, which is a 15 mb file. Quickpar tells you that you need 40 parts.

So you go and download

gaypr0n.vol007+40.par2

The +40 indicates how many parts are in that file. You can replace/repair any missing file as long as you have enough parts for it.

par files are totally kickass.. you don't need to download them, but it is often a good idea. For each par file you have, you can complete 1 corrupt file in the archive (assuming the size is the same).

So, if you have 100 1mb files and 2 are missing, any two par files could be used to regenerate the 2 that are missing. Last time I download from newsgroups, I used a program called 'Winpar' though I dunno if that's still the standard.

I once downloaded a 4-cd set of isos and I was missing the last 20 or so 15mb archives. But, the guy that uploaded it put up 20 par archives.. it was just enough for me to recreate the archive completely.
