Question about new LOTR '2 disc' DVDs

I see there are new releases that have each extended version on 2 DVDs instead of 4. Does that means it's compressed more and not as good?

BTW, it also says it has the orig. shorter versions. But is that really a separate copy on the disc or does it just not play the extended parts?

Shorter version is the version you watched in the theatres.

Extended edition on one side of Disc 1
Theatrical edition on the other side of Disc 1
Brand new documentaries on Disc 2

He's asking if it's a seperate copy on disc or if it just skips over the scenes from the extended versions within the same copy on disc.

So I presume they must be more compressed than the multi-disc versions of the extended editions.

Ugh. So you're saying the whole movie is on one side of the disc? That pisses me off cause I have the 4 disc extended editions which have the movie split onto 2 discs. What BS.

You're right, that part went right over my head. Looks like they'll be doing a double sided DVD, and compress the EE version. Ewwwwww.

Each of these new Limited Editions includes two discs. Disc One is a DVD-18 (dual-sided, dual-layered) disc that contains BOTH the original theatrical version of the film in question, as well as the longer (and BETTER) extended edition. This has accomplished via the use the latest advancements in MPEG-2 compression, by employing DVD's tried-and-true seamless branching capabilities, and by omitting the DTS audio track and the multiple audio commentaries that the previous 4-disc set included.

So, both versions on the same 2-sided disc.

Thanks for listing that site. So, with these the video quality (for the EE's) isn't as good as the 4 disc set, you lose DTS, the cool box, and still have to flip the DVD. And loose the printing on the disc face. The only plus is the different documentaries, and better VQ for the theatrical versions (which I never plan to watch again).

I saw somewhere comparision shots of LoTR encoded in regular DVD format and also in H.264. The difference was rather shocking - this is certainly a set of movies that would do well to be ported over to the new HD formats (although I'm not going to pay for it).

On certain torrent sites you can download the TS of LoTR, with RoTC at 35GB for that movie alone. I don't know what's the point in downloading something that size (they split it up to burn to 8 DVDs)

I think it said it was just upscaled didn't it? But yeah it looks great. And I can't believe DVD looks as bad as they show. I never noticed it looking that way.
