I have seen Buzz Aldrin on TV a number of times. He has been quite visible throughout the 1980's and 90's. However, I've never seen Neil Armstrong on TV. Nor have I heard much news of him. I had always thought that he died early on (in the 1970's), but I surprised to learn recently that he's still alive. So what's his story? Why is he so reclusive?

On the one hand, I praise him for his immense restraint (by that, I mean avoiding the camera, attention). But on the other hand, I think his restraint is a bit excessive. He is a great cultural icon.

I got to see Neil Armstrong in person last year (or was it two years ago?) when he came and visited Purdue. He is a Purdue graduate and came to one of our football games that was a tribute to astronauts. A good friend of mine got to eat dinner with him because he is one of the top students in the Aerospace Engineering program here at Purdue.
