Question about my P4 3.06Ghz

My Pentium 4 3.06Ghz processor (retail) arrived today, unfortunately my motherboard (Asus P4G8X Deluxe) doesn't arrive until tomorrow. Whilst I can do nothing more today than marvel at the weight and size of the Intel cooler and it's 10mm thick copper base I was wondering if anyone could give me any advice about it's production.

Here are the details stamped on the chip:

3.06GHZ/512/533
SL6S5 COSTA RICA
3248A424 - 8235

Also, I've not used a processor with thermal paste before. Can it be easily removed if I want to fit another cooler? And other than syringing the paste in a neat circle on the middle of the chip and putting the cooler on top (like the instruction says), anyone have advice on getting a good contact.

Thanks in advance :)

If I were you, I would not use the included thermal compound if you plan on removing the HSF. I am pretty sure that it is Shin-Etsu compound. When I tried it out, my 3.06 was stuck to the bottom of the HSF, and pulled right out of the locked socket. :Q I had to straighten some bent pins, but it was ok.

Do yourself a favor and use Arctic Silver 3 or some other quality thermal compound.

EDIT: The HSF is not bad for cooling. Somewhat loud, but does the trick. I would also suggest lapping the bottom.

Thanks for the quick reply Technonut. The thermal compound is Shin-Etsu. I'll go buy myself some Arctic silver if I can get it locally tomorrow.

Edit: On the subject of lapping, the integral heatspreader on top of the CPU is etched with numbers as in the first post (I incorrectly said stamped). Surely this is as bad or worse than any inconsistencies on the under surface of the HSF. Should I lap the CPU too? Or would that be obsessive? :)

Yeah... lapping would be a waste of time.
If your gunna do anything with the IHS. Take it off and use an Alpha 8942 or similar (retail cooler won't work with the IHS removed). You'll get better cooling and more OC'ing doing that instead. Lapping voids the warranty also :p
<--- assumes you'll be OC'ing anyway. A P4G8X Deluxe and a 3.06 CPU... [Drool/]

BTW. Remove IHS @ your own risk. Don't blame me should you do it wrong or slip while doing it.
I myself to it to all my own CPU's. But no-one elses as it voids the warranty entirely. I can live with my own faults.
