Question about my new laptop and monitor

Hi guys,

I'm having some issues with my new equipment. I recently bought a Dell Studio 16 XPS which has an ATI 3670 in it. There is no DVI connection on the laptop, but there is a display port output, VGA, and HDMI. I also bought a Dell 3007wfp-hc and want to run it at the native res of 2560x1600. I tried this with an HDMI to DVI adaptor and no luck. I read on ATI's website that Displayport supports this res, but how do I go about hooking this up? Will this work:

How do I know if it is Dual-link, or single link?

Thanks for any help.

The Apple one is for a Mini DP and I have heard bad things about them. Apparently when they first got released there was significant image distortion on teh monitor. No idea if they have it worked out because;
1: I don't have a new Mac with Mini DP and
2: Even if I did, I don't have $100 to drop on a adapter which is moot since
3: I don't have a 30" monitor.

So, for the OP, you can try finding an HDMI-Dual Link DVI cable, that MIGHT work, or hey, call Dell, they made the laptop and the monitor, maybe they will have an answer.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the responses. I know DP -> DVI adaptors, cables exist, but will it support 2560x1600? Dell wants me to buy a 70 dollar Belkin cable, don't get me started with them, they don't know anything! If I can't find a solution to this, I'm screwed.

If it isn't dual link then it won't do that res. It is entirely possible that the Belkin cable is the only one that can do it. DisplayPort is still a relatively new technology and not many have adopted it (though Dell did fairly early on IIRC) so that could explain the dearth of adapters/cables.

Alternatively you could contact Dell and see if you can return the 3007 and replace it with the 3008 since your post gives the impression that you purchased them at the same time. The 3008 has native DisplayPort as well as a bevy of other connectors.

Yes, I may have to do that, but the 3008 sucks. I played with one at a buddys house and the lag was pretty bad.

What exactly are you planning on using this monitor for? Also, how did your friend have it hooked up, and on what system?

Hopefully you get confirmation that the cable works. I mean it sucks to have dropped what... $1200 on the monitor, and then another probably... $1500+ on the laptop (assuming you got the high res screen and other goodies) only to have to turn around and spend another $70 on a cable, but dems da breaks.

In other news, how is that Studio 16? I have heard good things about the Studio series of machines from Dell, it looks like they are finally getting their act together and not just building cheap boxes and actually putting some more effort into construction quality and design.

The system is for work. I travel a bit and also I need the display for local shows I do.

The laptop really seems top notch. It was expensive though, for this you could get a Mac, but I prefer this.
