Question about my monitor

I have a Cambridge Soundworks 2.1 system and want to ensure the speakers are far enough away from my new CRT monitor (it's a Samsung 19" 997 df). I had them sitting right next to it and got a little distortion (a red tint in the lower left hand corner). I moved them to the back of the cabinet and the distortion stopped. How far should I set the speakers from the monitor as I want to ensure they are far enough away so I don't damage my monitor. I believe the manual from the monitor suggested 3 feet away from the monitor, which seems a bit excessive, not to mention it would be impossible with the way my computer desk is set up.

I've had my Logitech z-560's about a foot and a half away on either side from my crt monitor for a couple of years now with no problems so far.
