Question about my desktop's internet connection.

My desktop uses a Wireless PCI Adapter...My Mbps goes from 36-54 and vise-versa all time...signal strength seems to be either Very Low or Low...i'm recieving less packets then its sending...is that a problem?I ask this cuz my router/modem is a room away...probly no more than 12 steps away.I occasionaly lose connectivity and have ping problems during gaming.

Chances are you either have a bad NIC, a bad router, or something in between that is seriously blocking the reception. I have a wireless router and had one of those tiny wireless USB NICs in a computer in the other room. Reception was medium. However, the NIC was garbage and entirely impossible to configure, eventually I broke it and just drilled a hole in the wall for some cat5e. It's just better this way. I don't ever want to do wireless unless they come up with a better solution.

Geez, what pessimism. Sheesh... The old "throw the baby out with the bathwater" advice.

How about posting exactly what kind of router you have. Have you tried changing the channel your transmitting/receiving on? Could have 2.4ghz interference from others in the area, or cordless phones. Got a phone next to it by chance? There are also very inexpensive "cantennas" that you can use at the laptop position to boost signal strength.

I have a Belkin Pre-N router that absolutely rocks. I'm about 3 rooms away from my wireless laptop position (30 feet or so through various walls), and I consistently get 54mbps. If I had the Belkin pre-N card to go with it, I would be up around 108 (theoretically, of course). Just using the stock laptop built-in wireless nic.

Thank you

Anyways my tower is positioned under my desk and right on top of the desk is a phone...but it is wired.I have a Linksys Wireless-G WRT54G and my adapter's model is WMP54G also made by Linksys..what are these"catennas" you speak of?...Also sorry but I failed to mention that my Laptop which is in the same room and also uses a wireless notebook adapter has no problem...its costantly at 36mbps...signal strength is at excellent and I'm recieving more packets then sending.

Edit:Would my tower being backed up against the wall of my office be the problem?...

Can you test your speed, then physically move the computer or the router so that they're right next to each other - like a foot or two, with clear air between. If you still get bad speed then either the router and NIC don't like each other, or you have a software problem. If it's good, then maybe you have something in the walls that is interfering, or a neighbor has a 2.4 ghz phone or something.

Second the suggestion to try with another system using a separate NIC.
