Question about moving overseas

I'm moving to China at the end of the year, and am trying to get all my stuff ready. I had a few computer related questions. Basically I'm wanting to take a desktop with me as well as a laptop, but not sure if that's the best idea.

I've checked around online about taking desktops there, and I've had several people say you can only bring one computer with you, but my dad says they never check him when he goes through customs there so he isn't sure if that's true - but he only takes one laptop with him anyway. Can anyone speak to how true this is? I currently own a Lenovo Twist i5 w/SSD and I think I'll probably be getting rid of it because of the terrible battery life and low res screen. I'm hoping to get a 1080p quad core Atom this fall - I may wait and get it over there but I'd sorta like to have it for the flight......

2nd question is about the plugins. My dad recommended a converter, but I hear a lot of people say that even with those you'll blow components left and right, is that because of a poor power grid or because converters don't work that well? I'd prefer not to bring over a nice desktop and watch it fry.

3rd question. I read a lot of posts saying you're almost better off building a computer once there, because baggage handlers don't care about whats inside a bag. I'm not overly concerned about the size of my computers, and am planning on taking either my i7/GTX 660 ti in an FT03 or my i5/GTX 650 ti in an FT03 mini when I go. If I just remove my mechanical hard drives and wrap them in a blanket or something should I be ok?

If anyone else here goes over there or has been over there and has some suggestions/advice, I'm all ears. I'll be going to school at UESTC in Chengdu.

Since most all our computers are made in China, I would wait and buy over there.

I personally would not try to bring a desktop with me on a flight in checked luggage, it's asking for trouble. You're bound to have security/customs get on your case about it because it's unusual, and if they decide to confiscate it you're hosed.

It's much easier to ship it to your destination with insurance. These days it probably costs about as much to ship as it does to check an extra bag anyway :/ With the shipping insurance you're covered if something happens to it en-route. Just gotta double check the customs rules for shipping PCs from where you are to where you're going.

I'll have to check about shipping it, that might actually be cheaper than bringing it on board an airplane and a lot easier than lugging it through airports.
