First you say there was one big difference in the main plotline, and then hit us with this beauty:
I don't understand why every movie in Hollywood has to have a tired, classic "happy ending." The beauty of the book was the way it ended
Not to hard to deduce how the book ended from that little snippet. Thanks, you saved me some time and money from buying and reading the book. Idiot.

Here are some more books I am going to save you from reading:
gollum steals the ring and falls in the volcano, the little engine gets over the hill, curious george learns a lesson, and you're a jackass.

So the book doesn't end on a happy note, big flippin' deal. If that ruined the book for you, then you've got some serious issues. Read the book for the story and for the details; he gave next to nothing away. And good job, TheChort, your juvenile retort spoiled multiple stories for more than just him, and you're calling him a jackass?

I read the abridged version of the book. In French. Not my native language; a very, very challenging read, but so good.

This is my father's favorite book of all time, even having read it in Chinese...he can watch any adaptation (PBS, film, whatever) and sit there and point out what's been changed or wrong.

I read it a few times in my teens...I should give it another go.

Ok, to the original question: perhaps the warden was instructed to keep prisoners alive. Beating them too often might kill them, or something like that. Other theory is, "hey look, i'm gona beat you every year and there's nothing you can do but count your beatings"

That would make sense, a lot of prisoners were in there because they knew something that someone more powerful wanted. Of course, there were also many prisoners in there that were imprisoned so their knowledge wouldn't hurt the ruling class. Personally, I'd just kill someone with that kind of knowledge, its probably more humane to behead someone than to imprison them for 15 years. No chance of them escaping either.

I have only seen the 2002 release. Has anyone seen the original, or read the book?

You should definitely read the book (the abridged (sp?) version though as the full novel is long in the tooth). The book is one of the most entertaining novels ever.

Yeah, stick to watching youtube clips of jackasses injuring themselves. Reading one of the great classics could never add anything to your immensely rich life...

I read the book a few years ago (wow..during my frosh year..feels like so long ago) during my winter break. I got back to school and watched the movie with my roommate. I thought the movie SUCKED compared to the book and I think I might've actually fallen asleep towards the end. It's kinda sad to see that this movie is considered "my favorite movie" for some of you....read the book, it's SO much better.

But then again, most books ARE better than their movie counterparts.
