Question about MiniDisc players and regular CDs

Hi,
I was talking this morning to my friend and he told me that he really wanted to buy a minidisc player. Among the reasons, because he said that he could record his own voice, it was portable, etc...

I think he is confused about the concept of a minidisc player; or perhaps I am the one who is confused.

Is a minidisc the same as one of those regular cd's with a smaller diameter that can read any cd player, or is it a completely different type of media that cannot be read by a regular cd player?

If it is a different type of media, then I think I should advice him not to buy that minidisc player...

Different media. You can only record if you got a recorder for it. They NOT cheap.

Minidisc is a completely different format. Uses 2.5" media that looks like a small floppy disk. They are really popular in Europe.

Here are Sony's portable player/recorders.

I'm not going to explain all the pros and cons of them, but you don't seem to know enough about them to give a solid recommendation to your friend (either for or against). Not an insult, just a statement of fact.

Z24,
Thanks for the information.
I have to agree with you, I do not know anything about minidiscs players (otherwise I would NOT ask about them), and that's exactly why I didn't give any recommendation to my friend about what he should buy.

What I did tell him, however, was that a minidisc and a cd with smaller diameter are not the same thing, while he kept saying that they were.

I tried to advice him about this because apparently he wants to buy a minidisc player, record stuff, and then have a regular cd player read this media.

First of all, phisical incompabilities. The small single cd's are 3" cd's. Standard size is 5". On a minidisk, it's 2.5" AND minidisk comes in a protective cover, like a floppy disk, just like Z24 said.

It won't work if he cuts the cd's up and put them in the minidisk protective covers, as they weren't meant to be taken out or put in. ;)

Obviously that wouldn't work :)
My friend just thought that a minidisc player was a device meant to read cd's with a smaller diameter. A misconception I would say.

His insistence was such, that for one moment I thought was wrong;)

I can highly recommend a MD player, for several reasons....

* You can record your own disks and edit them on the go as you like. Cut here and there, swap tracks, etc.

* Very small, fits in a pocket

* Almost impossible to shake enough to cause the music to stop

* It's cool!!

It's expensive, I give you that, but it's worth it.....I just live mine. Sony's models are great and have never caused me any trouble.

duckers,

heh... I didn't quite understand what you were saying about your friend in the first post. Sounds like he's the one too mixed up. :)

Minidiscs are pretty cool. I had one for a while, but nobody else did. That, and the fact that I could get good money for it caused me to sell it.

edit: spelling.
