Question about manual vs. automatic

Yes? Also the engine in the S2000 is a tad more advanced (understatement) than say an engine in a Corolla or Civic...

You obviously haven't seen how teenagers drive corollas/civics and how well they put up with it.

Plus your s2k comment is plain idiocy. I have friends with boosted s2ks on stock internals with no problems whatsoever.

I can't comment on specific situations for obvious reasons but I can tell you that cruising at 4000rpm is very hard on the engine, almost exponentially compared to 2000rpm. You know what's also hard on an engine? Idling... Not enough oil pressure at idle which is why squad cars are specifically designed with better oil pumps for their extended idling they do. I just don't know what is going to happen to these cars at around 200K miles when they start having engine problems. Toyota and Honda are known for reliability but I think they've been slacking as of late and we won't know the full extent of this until these "economy cars" are well into their teens.

Also in case you're not aware (not that I'd expect you to) but the 3 speed corollas tend to have worse oil burning issues than the 5sp manual and 4 speed automatics because at highway speeds, the 3 speed corolla is revving much higher than those other vehicles. What some people with oil burning issues do is try to avoid highway speeds as it causes their engines to rev high and consequently burn more oil. Some guys have found that they can keep their oil burning to a minimum if they just drive at city speeds, especially the ones who've got the 3-sp transmissions.

That's wrong, and I have a vague idea of why it's wrong but can't elaborate. Someone else needs to pitch in and explain to this guy why running a car's engine half way up to its redline is a great way to cause it to wear down prematurely. It's usually only racing enhanced vehicles that are actually capable of such operation while most of the time, cars are intended to run at a lower rpm for a longer period of time and higher RPM for a shorter period of time. Again, I can't name specifics as to why it is this way but I'm fairly certain of it.

Why do you say something and expect a reader to back up your statement? Your opinion is useless in the garage and probably any where else, especially when we found out you don't even own a car and drive your moms luxurious toyota.

why do I or anyone in this thread... gives a shit about a 3 speed corolla, and your wikipedia research?

Hey you inconsiderate little twat, don't like my opinion? Don't take it! You're the one who started this thread asking about something you obviously know very little about. The answer is very clear if you know a thing or two about cars which you obviously do not. I chimed in with my knowledge, it has been made very clear why your piece of shit tiburon revs so high. You have no business being a dickhead especially when you're in no position to be judging one's answers. Just because there are some posters here who do not respect me simply because of the recommendation of tire pressure does NOT mean that I don't know what I'm talking about.

I gave you an example of a car that revs high compared to the same car with the same engine but different transmission that revs lower and how the higher revving car burns more oil. My advice is sound, judging by your posts you know next to nothing so please, STFU and go learn it on your own if you actually give a shit about having your question answered.

You don't need to own a damned thing to know anything. My parents have owned more cars than you'll ever own in your lifetime but that doesn't mean they know a thing about operating, fixing or maintaining a car. They're just like you, they bitch and moan about how things aren't working for them and then at the end of the day, they hire someone to fix their problem while paying through the nose to fix it...

I don't own a car because I have little money, don't try to judge ME about knowing a thing or two about a car when you're the one asking the elementary questions!

What does that even mean? Should he ask a question if he doesn't know something or should he learn all about the subject then ask questions? See my sig for the answer.

You need to take a break from this forum. I'm sure a mod will help you.

If he is going to be a little asshole about things, he can answer the question himself by learning about cars, like most people do. You don't ALWAYS have to ask questions in order to have a question answered. Some of the hardest questions I've had that couldn't be answered I answered myself....eventually. I have no idea if this is a passing interest or even just a one off question, where he actually cares to understand cars or not. Keep in mind that our answers to his question may very well go right over his head due to his limited automotive knowledge, so therefore the only solution is to in fact learn more on his own.

Too bad the things you learned yourself you did wrong

Actually the whole tire pressure thing was a suggestion mentioned numerous times by different people and I was extremely hesistant to do it. I finally tried it and found a net positive gain and the negatives in my opinion are outweighed by the positives.

So you tried this on your imaginary car? Well on my imaginary car I get 100 mpg by putting magnets around the fuel line. It must be right because I read about it on the internet!!!

Inflating the tires to max sidewall gives modest gains (~2-5 mpg) depending on what the vehicle gets already.

What was the topic again?

LOL
First: I really think my question is a legit question, I always wondered why not add a 6th gear just to make lower rpms? Sure enough this thread answered that andhelped. I know enough about cars to where I can do my own maintenance...Its called a service manual, (haynes?). Something you wouldn't own yet. Try changing your rotors next time you rotate those 5 tires...(there isn't a rotor in the spare btw)

Second: I tried googling my question before asking it on here, I found some topics, but nothing as in depth as the great community of anandtech has given me, thanks btw!

Third: I really don't have anything against, it just annoys me when someone puts another person down, especially when they have no idea what they're (you) talking about. I was just giving you a taste of your own medicine, I apologize but again I'm not really sorry.

Fourth (not really relevant): Why do you think I will never own as many cars as your parents? And I never bitched or moaned about my maintenance of my car? I in fact think your jealous that your parents never bought you a car, but hopefully you can one day achieve the amount of cars they've owned. Btw side note...I've owned 3 cars already, and im only 18. O and again about being poor? Well I worked my ass off and continue to do so, so thats not really an excuse.

And finally the Fifth to top it all off: People actually do care about your opinion...obviously were replying to it, BUT the credibility behind it went down hill when you turned into an asshole about everything.

edit:::::Actually after reading your paragraph, well trying...I had to get through all the "fluff." You basically called me stupid, and therefore I'm ok because I know the credibility behind your opinion is worth little to shit, and actually it strengthens my reply.

This is a recurring theme in every single thread he posts. He doesn't own a car, yet he claims to have tried all these different things.

That's interesting. He's listed as banned under his username. Guess it's back to P&N for entertainment...
