question about linux distros (not a recommendation thread)

i tried linux for the first time a few days ago, the ubuntu build, and i found it quite enjoyable. after using windows for so long it felt very fresh and adventurous if i do say so. with all the different distros though i was wondering, is there anything that can be done on one that can not be done on another? when i picked which distro to try it was between ubuntu and knoppix , and one thing i noticed was knoppix had a live dvd option, full of extra things.

so i was wondering was can you do everything the dvd version of knoppix does on ubuntu, downloading the right software of course, or can one distro do things that another can not?
 
The biggest differences between the Linux distros is their install methods, package managers, and default Windows managers. In theory you should be able to download the applications on the Knoppix DVD under Ubuntu. They may or may not be the same exact version but I would think the programs should be available - if not in the default repositories then in others you can add in for this or that applicaiton.
 
Knoppix and Ubuntu are both based on Debian, so they are going to be very similar. The major differences, as Robor said, between distrobutions is the package management and default installed applications.

Ubuntu should have all the software Knoppix has in the Ubuntu repositories.
