I'm purchasing a laptop with built in wifi, and looking into getting linksys WRT54G router. I was wondering is it only the v1 that can have it firmware upgraded to the 3rd party firmware or can all version of this model use this?

Which version is recommended, and which firmware? Please include some specifics, for using the recommended firmware/version. This will be for a home wireless network consisting ot a wired desktop and a wifi laptop.

Thanks

The WRTt54G has 4 MB ROM/16 MB RAM, and the WRT54GS has 8 MB ROM/32 MB RAM.

I have the WRT54GS, and I belive that is the recomended model (you can load many more different firmwares on it) . I'll try to find the thread.

I got the WRT54G. I ended up getting the HyperWRT54G firmware for it. The cool thing about it was that menus look and feel like the stock linksys firmware. It added some awesome stuff like QOS which is a must. I use VOIP for my phone line and was able to give my phone system high priority over everything else. I've had zero probs with it in the last 2 months.
